Root Cellar Catering is a locally inspired group devoted to serving delicious food, using only the freshest ingredients presented in an elegant, relaxed style. We specialize in serving house-made, Americana fare with an artisanal twist. We take the time to make our food from scratch, using ingredients from local Texas farms whenever possible, and baking our own breads daily. Not only is the food delectable but our welcoming, attentive staff are sure to make your experience a wonderful one.

Root Cellar Bakery is a delightful culinary workshop committed to serving made-from-scratch desserts and pastries. Our Texas roasted coffee beans are sure to perk up your mornings too!

Who's Cooking?

Steamed mussels in a white wine butter, with toasted house-made ciabatta of course!

Executive Chef Megan Turbeville is the marvel behind all the splendid food we offer our guests. She attended Le Cordon Bleu at the Texas Culinary Academy and has held head and executive chef positions in the restaurant industry for 12 years.

Ashley Miller is the genius behind all the exquisite desserts we offer our guests. She held a residency with Mark Joseph Cakes in Manhattan, NY and has worked in the cake industry since 2011.

Our History

The Root Cellar Cafe opened its doors in 2005 and has since been featured in Texas MonthlyBetter Homes and Gardens, and on PBS' Day Tripper. It has also received awards for Best in Hays County and #8 "Best in Texas" restaurant.

The River

Our mermaid mural lives on the wall behind our bakery, and reminds us that the river is the heart of San Marcos. We are conscientious of the footprint we make, and strive to use sustainable goods whenever possible. Why the mermaid? The mermaid has become the mascot of San Marcos. She promotes stewardship and conservation. We are proud sponsors of the Mermaid Society, see our blog post about last year's festivities!

Feeding the Community

We believe that strong community ties are what bind us together. When your neighbor falls, you lend a hand and help them up. Our work with the Hays County Food Bank through our “Desserts for a Difference” initiative has raised over $4,000 yearly for the food bank.

The annual Foodstock celebration is the creation of our owner, Kyle Mylius, who wanted to combine his passion for music and his compassion for those in need. This all day event hosts local musicians, artists, and vendors, with proceeds going to help feed the most vulnerable of our community.
